After a hearty lunch in India, people traditionally like to serve Hingwastak, often called simply "Hing". This popular Hingvashtaka consists of Hing and a total of eight ("Ashta") valuable spices such as ginger, ajwain, black cumin, pepper and rock salt. Hingvashtaka is said to burn Ama, the toxins and waste products that, according to the Ayurvedic tradition, can result from too little digestive fire (Agni) and heavy, hard-to-digest food. In Ayurveda, they are considered the main cause of imbalance.

In North India, Hing is an ingredient in many curries and vegetable dishes. It is usually used to prepare food conveniently. Traditionally, Hingvashtaka is mixed 1:1 with Ayurvedic ghee and taken before meals.

The main ingredient, Hing, is better known by the Latin name asafoetida, which means "bad-smelling resin". It is also known by other names, such as "devil's dung", which does not sound very appealing. However, if you know how to use Hing or Hingwastak properly, you will quickly notice that not only does the intense smell of sulfur disappear during cooking, but the dish acquires a pleasant taste with a light leek spice.

If Hingwastak is prepared directly with food, the same rule applies as when preparing it with Asafoetida: use it very sparingly - then it gives a good, very special aroma to many dishes.

It is traditionally recommended to mix Hingwastak with ghee and take it before meals. Pure ghee is believed to be difficult for the body to absorb.

If you want to enrich ghee with honey or sugar, it is a great source of energy - but due to the sugar content of ghee, it is advisable to use it in moderation.
